SPLIT RED - "SERIOUS HEFT" [New Atlantis Records] / October 14th, 2014

Split Red, from notoriously hard-hitting Philadelphia, PA, graciously endow you with Serious Heft. Over the course of their six song debut, this quintet conflates spades of punk rock aggression, Beefheart-ian vocal abstractions, and twin guitar skronk to offer a head-spinning and progressive diversion from the dreck of the herd. The band was conceived as a collective, mining disparate veins of inspirational ore throughout the city’s vibrant creative underground. Members of Many Arms, Cuddle Magic, Deleted Scenes, Joe Lally Trio (of Fugazi), and Make A Rising have identified as Split Red during the unit’s evolution. Accordingly, the group’s sonics are a continuum, forever flourishing into new spaces to manifest the underlying ethos of the unit. In every incarnation, the band exemplifies the tireless work ethic and raucous aural aesthetic of the storied SST Records roster, while harnessing the dissonance and tension of the avant-garde.

Serious Heft was mostly composed during various trips to El Salvador. Inspired by the witness of heroic liberation theologians and freedom fighters, the record is informed by domestic oppression, injustice, and cultural repression. Fittingly, the medium here is punk rock that is unfiltered and untarnished by mainstream contrivances and compromises… Expertly captured to tape by Colin Marston (of Krallice),the record is bursting with searing feedback and the saturated, harmonically-rich sound of power tubes buckling. This creative space is punk rock, in both polemics and practice. Lumbering, thunderous rhythms are nimbly imbued with polyrhythmic propulsion. Massively articulate shredder, and New Atlantis veteran, Brandon Seabrook makes a dizzying appearance on the album’s opener…

In spite of its brevity, Serious Heft makes a weighty impression. If you grab your copy on October 14, you can run the voodoo down with us. Split Red have shared the stage with Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, Trevor Dunn, Stinking Lizaveta and many more… Now, with this record in your stereo, they’ll practically be playing just for you, inside of your very own house. Fans of Black Flag, Funkadelic, Amphetamine Reptile, Swiz, Saint Vitus, the Melvins, the Jesus Lizard, and Shellac take note. Let’s do the damn thang. (New Atlantis Records)

"...punk with an unbridled, avant-garde antagonism. It's unexpected, like seeing a hungry coyote running through a block of track homes. Notice received: Split Red do what they want." - Brooklyn Vegan

Shows You the Most, Part 6

Logo by Travis Woodson
Electric Simcha will be playing June 9th at International Waters House in West Philadelphia. We're playing with Les Rhinocéros, and it will be a fun, potentially sweaty show! I did drop the ball on mentioning our first show since New Year's Eve at The Blockley with Slavic Soul Party and West Philadelphia Orchestra on May 19th (sorry for not posting about it, whomever reads this).

Time?: 8PM, roughly
Money?: $5 Donation, perhaps
Where Are You?: 532 S. 48th St. (btwn Hazel & Larchwood)
What's My Age?: All ages!

June 22nd: Music for Three Guitars: Arrangements and Compositions by Travis Woodson - "The music that you will be hearing is a preview of some material I have worked on for the past year. I basically wanted to come up with a series of compositions and/or arrangements I thought would translate easily for this type of instrumentation, as well as be inquisitive of the sound possibilities. With the aid of Alban Bailly and Nick Millevoi, you will hear music from some of my favorite composers like Ornette Coleman, Morton Feldman, György Ligeti, and a special piece, originally written for solo guitar, by Philadelphia's own Eric Slick. I will also be sharing a few of my own compositions, including a song I wrote while in Make a Rising that didn't make the cut. I'm quite fond of how these turned out, and would love to share these ideas with everyone as I'm going through this process. Together, we will finally solve the age-old question: How many guitarist does it take to screw in a light bulb?" Link
Time?:  8PM
Money?: FREE, but you can donate
Where Are You?: The Rotunda - 4014 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA
What's My Age?: All ages!

Split Red will be heading up to Death by Audio in Brooklyn on June 24th. We will be playing with Tom Blancarte, Louise D.E. Jensen, Tim Dahl, and Weasel Walter in different configurations throughout the night.
Time?:  8PM
Money?: $7
Where Are You?: 49 S. 2nd St., Brooklyn, NY
What's My Age?: Questionable.

Shows You the Most, Part 2

Logo by Erik Ruin
Split Red will be playing in West Philadelphia on the 1st of December at Elena's with our new singer Justin Duerr from Northern Liberties. Joining on the bill will be Little Women (remember me mentioning something about Travis Laplante being in that group?), my fellow Simcha band mate Nick Millevoi's group Many Arms (I hear they're having their latest being released on Tzadik soon) and another local group Banned Books (I actually haven't heard this band, so I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing them live). This is definitely an "earplugs party", but it'll be tons of fun. So come prepared! Tell your friends, invite them on Facebook if you have to!

And don't forget: Split Red is playing this Sunday at the Highwire Gallery!

Shows You the Most

Simcha at Johnny Brenda's
I've got some interesting things coming up.

November 4th: Electric Simcha will be making our South Philly debut at Cha-cha'razzi. I actually never been to this place yet, so I'm looking forward to it. We'll be playing with the Raya Brass Band, which features a few members of another brass group we had the opportunity to play with this past summer called the Ververitse Brass Band. CANCELLED!

November 11th: I was set-up on a "blind date" as apart of a experiment music festival at the fidget space (1714 N. Mascher St.), curated by <fidget> and Nicole Bindler. I was paired with a dancer that I have never met, and our goal is to improvise on the spot, which is just as awkward as an actual blind date. All kidding aside, I'm looking forward to improvise with my selected partner in crime, having awkward small talks and wondering if the check will arrive soon. To quote the event details: "Like it or not, the artists' pairings won't be disclosed until the show. Improvisational relationships will be forged; the visual and aural "now" will be given the time and space to meet. How simultaneously lovely and uncomfortable."

November 20th: Split Red will be at the Highwire Gallery in Fishtown for Travis Laplante's CD Release Show. I've seen Travis play with Extra Life and Little Women in the past and have only seen him do his solo thing via YouTube. This will be quite the treat for me and others to see him do his thing. Joining us will be two sets of duos with Joe Moffett (trumpet) / Kristin Slipp (voice) and Anthony Pirog (guitar) / Scott Verrastro (drums).

I hope to see some familiar and new faces, so come out if you can, and have an EPIC Halloween.

Split Red Goes Acoustic for Coltrane's birthday, Local Coffee Shop Rejoices

This Friday at the Green Line Cafe on Locust, Split Red for the third time will be leaving the amps at home. You heard right! This has been a recent tradition for us to do acoustic shows. We were asked by Nick Millevoi a few months back at a Highwire Gallery show he was curating to perform this way and it seemed like an interesting prospect. This will be the second time at the Green Line that we will be presenting this music in this setting (the first included an electrified Rick Iannacone) and the fact that it's on John Coltrane's birthday makes it even more special. Joining us on the bill will be N.Y. saxophonist Louise D.E. Jensen, Dan Liptock of Warshack and Deep Possum doing a solo set, and Ben Remsen of Little Ocean will be in the mix as well (I recommend checking out Little Ocean's latest release, Pictures at an Ocean Mission, available on Bandcamp).
